“Ardhi Yetu: Hadhi, Maendeleo Na Amani.” This was the theme for the 2nd Annual Land Symposium 2016 which was organized by our Regional office in Mombasa, under the Coast Conflict Intervention and Action Project – through the generous support of USAID.
The two days symposium held at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Hotel in Mombasa on the 12th and 13th of July 2016 brought together key land stakeholders drawn from various sectors.
The Coast Land Non-State Actors Network organizations including ActionAid, Haki Yetu, Ujamaa, MUHURI, Kenya Land Alliance, KNCHR among others joined representatives including officers from the Judiciary, Ministry of Lands, Mombasa Law Society, IEBC and the Office of the Senator, Mombasa County.
Also represented were organizations such as Base Titanium and Kenya Railways, Community Based Organizations and participants drawn from Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Mombasa Counties.
The Symposium was able to offer solutions for communities facing challenges from large scale investments more so on the issues of compensation, effect of extractives on the communities, the place of women in relation to land, elections and land, Alternative dispute resolution as a tool for resolving land disputes and finally land administration and governance.
This second symposium was a big success and opens up the possibility of new ventures in land law.
