Chairpersons

Below are the chairpersons of the Board of Kituo Cha Sheria – Legal Advice Center

 Justus Munyithya  is a renowned Human Rights lawyer. He is a former vice chair of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Mombasa branch. He has a Masters degree in law (LLM) and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. He is also a lecturer at the Kenya School of law.

Anthony Mulekyo is an advocate of the High court of Kenya and the founder of Anthony M. Mulekyo Advocates. He brings over 10 years’ experience in practice to the Kituo Cha Sheria board. His main driving force is diligence and commitment and he has won awards for pro-bono service provision in Kenya which has played a vital role in bridging the gap between justice and victims of injustice in Kenya. Mr Mulekyo specializes in constitutional and human rights law, pro bono legal services and alternative dispute resolution. He currently chairs the Kituo Board of Directors.

Dr. Ken Nyaundi is a legal practitioner with experience spanning over two decades. He has over the years distinguished himself in civil litigation, commercial transactions, property and conveyance and public law, particularly international human rights and constitutional issues. He is also a chartered arbitrator. Presently he serves as the managing partner at Marende & Nyaundi Advocate, a specialized law firm in Nairobi.
Dr. Nyaundi has served in the public sector in various capacities. He was the founding chairperson of the Media Complaints Commission; a Commissioner with the Interim Independent Electoral Commission; a director of the South – South Centre; a member of the Task Force on Devolved Government; and, a member of the Taskforce on the development of Policies and Legislation to implement article 34 of the Constitution.
He is the current chairman of the Council of the International Commission of Jurists- Kenya chapter and still serves as member of Kituo’s Board of Directors.
Dr. Nyaundi holds a Master of Laws in Public International Law, from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is currently a PhD candidate in International Law at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

Mr. Waiganjo is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and he holds a bachelor of laws and master of laws both from the University of Nairobi. He is a Chartered Arbitrator and has been in private legal practice for over 20 years and was senior partner at Kamotho Maiyo & Mbatia Advocates specializing in commercial and conveyance law. He has taught law at the Kenya School of Law. Mr. Waiganjo has also been involved in wide ranging consultancy in constitutional law and served as advisor to numerous bodies during the constitution making process.
Mr. Waiganjo is extensively involved in public interest work and sits in the boards of several charities and civil society organizations. He is currently a commissioner in the Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution and along with others is charged with responsibilities to oversee, facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the constitution of Kenya 2010.

Justice Mumbi Ngugi is a judge of the High Court of Kenya since 2011 and in her career as a judge of the High Court so far, she has been distinguished courageous and independent. Justice Ngugi has distinguished herself as a courageous defender of the Bill of Rights and has contributed to giving the new constitution the stability it needs, particularly in a challenging transitional period. She graduated with her bachelor of laws degree from the University of Nairobi before she earned a Master of Laws (Merit) degree for the London School Economics and Political Science; University of London. She was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1988 and began with a career in private practice.
While in private legal practice, Justice Ngugi found time to get involved in civil society working for the Series on Alternative Research in East Africa Trust (SAREAT), Legal Consultant on a multi-disciplinary team of the COWI-World Bank drawing the Urban Informal Settlement Relocation Plan for the relocation of informal settlement dwellers on the Kenya railways reserve in Kibera and Mukuru. appearing before the Waki Commission as a Legal Counsel, on behalf of the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-K) representing victims of gender-based violence.
She has served on boards of several non-profit organizations such as Kituo Cha Sheria, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA-K), and as Managing Trustee, of the Albinism Foundation of East Africa. In between a busy professional life she also served as member of the Working Group on Equality and Non-discrimination legislation comprising the Federation of Women Lawyers – Kenya, Kenya Human Rights Commission and the Equal Rights Trust (UK) (2010- 2011), a member of the Public Interest Litigation Caucus convened by Kituo Cha Sheria comprising Kituo, ICJ Kenya and the National Commission on Human Rights.

Mr. Kibara is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya of more than 20 years standing. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi and a Masters of Law from University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa. He has worked in government being the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs, where he was in charge of overseeing constitutional development, legal reform, justice sector reform, and sectoral coordination. He previously served as the Secretary for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in the Ministry, and Director of Legal Affairs, overseeing institutional development.

In addition to his work in the government, he has previously served as Executive Director of the Centre for Governance and Development (CGD) and Deputy Director of the Public Law Institute (PLI). He has also served in various positions in civil society organizations, as chairman of the National Council of NGOs (NGO Council) and the chairman of the Board of Kituo Cha Sheria. Mr. Kibara has written and authored official reports on constitutional development, constitutional reform, justice sector reform, and electoral management.

Dr. Gachuki was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a senior lecturer in Law at the University of Nairobi. He attained his LL.B from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and his LL.M from Queens University, Ontario, Canada in 1976 and 1977 respectively. He held a Ph.D (International Business and Investment Law) from University of Warwick, Coventry, England (1982).
Dr. Gachuki has published severally and was a respected commercial law researcher and teacher. He has previously served as Kituo’s BoD chair and is an active volunteer advocate at Kituo since 1980. Dr. Gachukia passed away on 18th September, 2018.
