Below are the founder members of Kituo Cha Sheria – Legal Advice Center
A career Judicial Officer for over three decades as a Magistrate and currently as a Judge of the High Court of Kenya, Lady Justice Ang’awa holds a Master of Laws, degree (2005) and a Bachelor of Laws degree (1979) from the University of Nairobi. She is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya (1980), was Secretary to the Commission of Inquiry into the Insurance Industry (1986-1988), Chairperson of the Rent Restriction Tribunal (1989-1991) and a Commissioner with the Advocates Complaints Commission (1991-1993).
Dr. Mutunga is a lawyer, intellectual, reform activist, and the former Chief Justice of Kenya and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya (2011-2016). He is a holder of a Doctorate Degree in Jurisprudence obtained in 1992 from Osgoode Hall law School at York University in Toronto, Canada. Dr. Mutunga obtained both his Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) and Master of Laws degrees from the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania in 1971 and 1974 respectively.
Dr. Mutunga has established and served in many civil society organizations, among them the Legal Advice Centre (Kituo Cha Sheria); the Law Society of Kenya, where he served as vice-chairman from 1991 to 1993 and chairman from 1993 to 1995; the Council for Legal Education, Kenya; the Citizens Coalition for Constitutional Change (4Cs); the Kenya Human Rights Commission; the East African Centre for Constitutional Development (Kituo Cha Katiba), Uganda; and the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights and Democracy) in Montreal, Canada.
Dr. Gachuki was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and a senior lecturer in Law at the University of Nairobi. He attained his LL.B from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and his LL.M from Queens University, Ontario, Canada in 1976 and 1977 respectively. He helds a Ph.D (International Business and Investment Law) from University of Warwick, Coventry, England (1982).
Dr. Gachuki has published severally and was a respected commercial law researcher and teacher. He has previously served as Kituo’s BoD chair and is an active volunteer advocate at Kituo since 1980. Dr. Gachukia passed away on 18th September, 2018.
Rtd. Justice Juma is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya admitted to the Bar in 1973 going on to join the Bench where he rose to serve as a Judge of the High Court.
The late Steven Adere was an advocate of the High Court of Kenya practicing constitutional and human rights law, family law and succession matters, corporate law among others. He was admitted in the Bar in 1973
Mr. Jaffer is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya (1978) and a Human Rights defender of great standing; Murtaza has served as the Special Assistant to the Prosecutor at the UN- International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. He previously served as a judge of the Industrial Court of Kenya (2003 – 2005) in Nairobi and on the boards of several government, private sector and non-governmental bodies as well as inter-faith groups. Mr. Jaffer has worked on human rights, judicial and organizational capacity building issues in a number of conflict countries in Africa, including Somalia and South Sudan.
