Land, Environmental and Climate Justice

Goal: To promote access to land rights, climate and environmental justice for vulnerable communities.

Climate change in Kenya has had severe and far-reaching effects, especially on vulnerable communities such as pastoralists, small-scale farmers, women, children, persons with disabilities, and informal settlements. These communities often lack the resources, infrastructure, or political power to adapt or respond effectively. While there is growing awareness and a progressive legal framework on ESG, implementation is hindered by resource constraints, poor coordination, and a lack of standardized reporting.

KITUO supports initiatives that aim to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change, natural resource management and environmental degradation on vulnerable populations, particularly those already marginalized due to poverty, gender, or geographic location. KITUO’s interventions emphasize equitable access to resources, participation in decision-making, and holding those most responsible for land, climate and environmental justice accountable. KITUO works hand in hand with local communities, advocates and paralegals to secure fair investment agreements that include strong protections against harm to local livelihoods and ecosystems. Awareness and education programs to sensitize local communities on land rights, climate change and environmental justice are also prioritized.
